February 2008: Peter Clayton for DVC Post
Peter Clayton Appointed as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Development) for Rhodes University
Rhodes
University has announced the appointment of Peter Clayton to the new
position of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Development). This is
great recognition for all that he has done in establishing and growing the
Department's research programme over many years, particularly through the Telkom
Centre of Excellence in Distributed Multimedia.
The new post comes about from the restructuring of the University's top leadership to incorporate two Deputy Vice Chancellors — one with responsibility for research and development, and the other overseeing academic and student affairs.
Peter completed his undergraduate and Honours degrees at Rhodes, then joined the Department of Computer Science in October 1982, after a few years working in the IT industry in Pretoria. He obtained his PhD in 1989 for research in the area of distributed and parallel programming. He was appointed as Professor of Computer Science in 1993, and served as Head of Department for two very successful terms: 1995–1998 and 2000–2002. In May 2003, he received a prestigious NSTF Award for his research activities and leadership.
As a Department, we shall miss his immense contributions to our endeavours, but we look forward to working with him in his new capacity as we continue to grow our research programme along the trajectory that he has helped to establish.
