CS Postgrads Win Regional Innovation Fund Competition

Two CS Postgraduate project commercialization proposals were announced on Thursday 28 October as the first and second prize winners in the regional round of the Innovation Fund competition.

First prize of R50 000 went to PhD student Jason Penton for a commercialization proposal of his Voice over IP (VoIP) softswitch.  His team members in the proposal were Jonathan Hitchcock and Sonwabile Nomnganza, a postgrad from Fort Hare who has collaborated on the project.

Second prize of R30 000 went to Jo Janse van Rensburg and Jonathan Leigh for their proposal to commercialize the use of RFID technology in a national animal tracking system.

The third prize of R20 000 was awarded to a Biotechnology proposal to produce honey vinegar.

The three winning proposals will go forward to the national final competition.
