The Computer Science Department is active in a number of research fields.  Details of staff and student research projects can be found on our Research Portal.

There are specific research groups working on Distributed Multimedia (under the auspices of the Telkom Centre of Excellence), Virtual Reality and Graphics, and Audio Engineering.  Within these areas there are ongoing projects focusing on a wide range of topics, including:

• network traffic monitoring, control and visualisation
• network protocols
• rendering techniques for virtual reality
• software engineering for distributed systems
• the use of XML and web services
• real-time networking for audio data
• wireless networking
• multimedia databases
• and many more.
